LJ Pumpkin Carvageddon update

I hope everyone had a great Halloween! We'll be picking our pumpkin carving winners tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm seeing a lot of Carvageddon entries missing their usernames in the pumpkin picture. Please note that your username must be in one of the pictures with your pumpkin carving in order to be eligible for one of the prizes, as stated in the contest rules. If it's not too late, get your username in a pic with your pumpkin.

We'll pick the winners and make the announcements around 2pm Pacific Time on Wednesday.
Halloween was pretty low key for the LJ Editors, until we got to reading the scariest, silliest, cleverest and pithiest tweets for our first ever LJ 'Trick or Tweet' contest.

LJ Twitter uses were asked to finish the sentence: "It was a dark and stormy night..." in one tweet.

Thank you to everyone who participated. We enjoyed reading them all. In no particular order, these are our favorites and the winners of 500 LJ tokens each:

  • @ariandalen
...when the lightning etched your profile in the window, but you lay three days buried. #ljtrickortweet

  • @Mythotic
...yet the lj rper never knew, much too caught up in their slash and drama and 100x100 pixel fantasies to care. #ljtrickortweet

  • @JenCarpeDiem
@LiveJournal "It was a dark and stormy night..." when Anne first heard it; a baby screaming in the long-empty cradle. #ljtrickortweet

  • @swallowtt
...when a piercing bite took and gave life. Sharp fangs awakened by a new hunger; the scent of blood dripping from a knife. #ljtrickortweet

  • @reddogrising
#ljtrickortweet It was a dark and stormy night, the light from my computer keeping me company, but then with a CRASH the screen went dark!

  • @skydiver119
#ljtrickortweet it was a dark & stormy night when she came n2 his world. Eyes of grey, lips of pink, she ruled his life from her 1st blink.

  • @thismissmilano
@LiveJournal it was a dark and stormy night, which made the kite flying contest both risky and hard to judge. #ljtrickortweet

  • @liralenli
It was a dark and stormy night, and kids gleefully ran into it to trick-or-treat with soggy, reluctant parents close behind. #ljtrickortweet

  • @Csophae
It was a dark and stormy night and the kid dressed as the weatherman got pelted with eggs by the trick or treaters. #ljtrickortweet

  • @RuariGoesRawrr
It was a dark & stormy night as she slipped from reality, grief driving her over the edge of madness, to a kiss from the sea #ljtrickortweet

Congratulations! If you are a winner, we will contact you via Twitter.

ONTD's Annual Costume Contest

BOO. Scared yet? Well….you should be. ONTD's Annual Costume contest is almost upon us! Here's what you need to know:

On November 1, there will be a submissions post, with comments screened, where you comment with a photo in your costume. In order to be eligible to win, you MUST have an ONTD sign in the photo. After submissions close, the mods will go through and narrow down the entries for a poll ONTD can vote on. After the poll is closed and winner announced, the original submission post will be unscreened for everyone to enjoy. BASICALLY, the same exact way it went down last year.

HOWEVER, this year will be slightly different because we'll have CATEGORIES! The categories are:

- Best Overall
- Best Film/TV/Celebrity Inspired
- Most Original
- Best Couple / Group
- Most Scary/Gruesome
- Most Hilarious

There will be a poll and prize for each category, TBA later. (We're trying to avoid the generic blandness of Amazon gift cards, so suggestions of prizes people might actually want are welcome!) The mods will pick the best fits for each category and there is a chance that a costume could be eligible for multiple categories (i.e.…mods might pick one that's scary, but it might also be eligible for best overall) which will all be voted on by the community.

More specific details and timelines will be included with the submission post, but I'll try to answer any questions that I can.

To celebrate the spookiness of Halloween, LJ Scribes will be hosting a special contest on Twitter next week.
Finish the sentence: “It was a dark and stormy night…” in 125-characters or less. Then tweet your entry. You do not need to include the prompt, however you must mention a #ljtrickortweet hashtag in your tweet.
10 of the most clever and creative entries will win 500 tokens each!

The contest will be open from 9 am PST to 11:59 pm PST on Halloween (Monday, October 31,2011).

If you don’t want to post to Twitter, that’s okay too. We’ll still be having our regular writer’s competition (starting at 4 pm PST), so you can just post it in this community all week. Just remember to keep the entry under 125 characters!

We'll remind you again about the contest. But in the meantime, get the word out to friends, scribes and countrymen! Contest is open to anyone with who has or wants an LJ account!

Thank you all for sharing your bullying experiences with the LJ community in Writer's Block on Monday. Bullying affects so many people in so many ways. Your contributions and your personal experiences, in whatever form you chose to share, play a part in the continued discussion about bullying. Perhaps these stories will inspire those who feel threatened by bullying in their lives to reach out for the support of a friend of family member.

The list of finalists from Writer's Block and comments posted here in lj_contests has been finalized and a winner has been chosen. Congratulations to punkgrl5, winner of an Amazon Kindle and a $25 Amazon gift card! :-)

While bullies aren’t going to vanish overnight, we can turn the tide by reaching out to friends, victims, and bullies alike to learn more about the roles people play in this cycle and what can be done to improve relationships. By working to better recognize bullying and the tactics employed by bullies, we can engage both the victims and their aggressors in an effort to minimize the effects of bullying. If you've been affected by bullying directly or you know someone who has, we invite you to share your experiences over at bullying_begone.

Update (10/4/2011): The list of finalists from Writer's Block and comments posted here in lj_contests has been finalized and a winner has been chosen. Congratulations to punkgrl5, winner of an Amazon Kindle and a $25 Amazon gift card! :-)
I bring news from the quarters of Dread Pirate Vivo Revista:

Ahoy, mateys! I reckon me crew and I are sailing for warmer climes. The sun has set on another Talk Like a Pirate Day. Before we hoist the mainsail, I raise me mug to all the brave pirates who faced me challenge and lived to tell the tale. And now, I salute the five pirates who brought a belly full of "Yo-ho-ho" to this salty sea dog. Yar!! You've earned yer keep, ya silver-tongued brigands!

Fair winds and farewell!

Joe was walking up his driveway after work, when he saw his son with a big black pirate hat on and swinging a wooden sword. He called to his son and asked what he was doing, His son answered "Im a pirate!

His father smiles and said really? "Where are your Buccaneers?"

His son looks at him like he was an idiot and replied "Under my buckin 'at!"

A captain of a pirate ship was well liked by his crew & had a reputation for bravery. Every time he approached a ship & prepared for battle he would turn to his first mate and say "fetch me my red shirt." one day the mate asked him why he always askec for his red shirt before a battle. "for the crew" the captain said. "the crew may loose hope if their captain is wounded. This way, if i am wounded in battle, the red shirt will hide the blood & the crew will not loose hope." a few days later as the ship was sailing a sailor called out that 3 warships were approaching. The captain looked out with his telescope then scanned the seas around him & saw 3 more warships coming from the other direction. The first mate asked "shall i fetch your redshirt sir?". "yes," the captain responded. "and my brown pants."
