So, we've read all the fantastic submissions, we've wept blood and beaten our chests trying to make selections from the pool of submissions everyone sent -- seriously, some great work there -- and we have chosen our Grand Prize winner.

But we're not going to tell you yet.

No, we're not just being cruel; we need to get your opinions first. We've also chosen ten semi-finalists, and from those ten, you guys are going to pick the Community Grand Prize winner.

We won't attach a LJ username to these submissions for now, but once we've announced our winners, we'll come back and give everyone public props. And remember, if you entered and you don't see your submission here -- well, we've still got our Grand Prize winner to announce.

Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry. We had a heck of a lot of fun reading the diverse voices from our community. And congratulations to everyone!

Without further ado, the finalists (in, as they say, no particular order) can be found in these two entries:

Community Grand Prize Finalists, 1/2
Community Grand Prize Finalists, 2/2

And a poll for you to make your selection:

EDIT: Voting is CLOSED as of 11:59 PM PDT, Monday, April 30, 2007. Watch this comm for further details! No further votes will be counted as of that time.

I just wanted to say, as a creative writing major with a love for creative nonfiction, that I thought all of the stories were spectacular and I really hope to see them made into lenghier pieces of creative non fiction. We could really use more emphasis in the genre. . .

Good luck to all the pieces. I hope my pieces wins. . .I won't say who I voted for. . .but I hope that they keep the amazing writing up!

I narrowed it to 4 faves ok, and went to tick the boxes. Oh - I can only choose one. :(

So I chose the one that made me cry the most

Wow. I don't even know how to pick just one. They were all amazing and touching in their own way, and I'm glad to have read them.

I, too, am awful curious.

Why does it say results viewable to: None but I can actually see the results so far? Wouldn't knowing who is currently in the lead or doing the worst sway the results? And isn't it unfair to the entrants to know exactly where they currently stand in the poll?

It blocks showing who voted for which. And doesn't show anything until after the vote is cast.

Yeah, I get that, I just think we shouldn't be able to see any results at all if it states that results are viewable to None. *shrug*

It's good to know the poll results don't show up until after the vote, but I'd really rather they weren't available at all. That way, I'd stop obsessively checking them ;^)

Good luck to all the finalists. Your essays are awesome!

'twould be helpful to know when voting ends (and by extension, when both Grand Prize winners are announced).

Why would that be "helpful"? Voting shouldn't be done watching for the deadline to rack up last-minute votes.

Also, that information is already available.

Ah, so it was listed in the main contest entry. My oversight, then.

Curiosity
Why didn't we see any humor in the finalist entries? Were there any humorous submissions that didn't make it? Shouldn't we be able to laugh at ourselves in our various situations?

I'm honestly just asking this from curiosity.

I thought #2 was > #6.

But I am a child (teen) of the new generation.
